Application Instructions

Please read all of the information below. A complete application should include all of the following:

1. Online Application Form

Individuals will be required to create an account in order to save one’s progress on the application. A non-refundable fee of $65.00 USD is required to submit an application. The online application can be found here.

Qualified applicants who are US citizens or permanent residents with documented membership in approved programs or documented financial need may request an application fee waiver. The following are examples of qualifications:

  • AmeriCorp or City Year Volunteer
  • Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minorities Students (ABRCMS)
  • Fulbright Scholars
  • Gates Millennium Scholars
  • McNair Scholars
  • Minority Biomedical Research Support Program (RISE)
  • PeaceCorp Volunteers
  • Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS)
  • Teach for America Volunteers
  • Applicants who fall below the federal poverty guidelines

Applicants who wish to be considered for a fee waiver must complete the Fee Waiver Request Form, submit a copy of their latest 1040, 1040EZ or 4506T-EZ tax form and documentation of scholarship or volunteer participation via e-mail to ogps@med.miami.edu and mscti@miami.edu.

You will be asked to provide information about three references who can provide you with letters of recommendation.

Additionally, you will be asked to answer some specific questions about your application to our program and to submit a Personal Statement.

2. Exam Scores

Applicants must have official standardized examination scores sent to the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies:

Applicants must meet criteria for A or B below. All applicants must also meet criteria for C below:

A. Applicants may submit one of the following standardized test scores: GRE, MCAT, or DAT

OR

B. Applicants who have not taken the GRE or other U.S. standardized tests will need to submit the following as evidence of academic experience and training. The following will be considered as evidence of English proficiency and would support a waiver of a standardized exam:

  • An earned master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited domestic or international college or university.
  • Transcripts with evidence of quantitative ability based on grades earned in quantitative and science courses.
  • Demonstrated evidence of readiness for the degree via resume and work/leadership experience.

Applicants that provide this information should complete an Exam Waiver Request Form and submit to mscti@miami.edu. Submitting a waiver request does not guarantee the standardized exam will be waived.

C. Any applicants whose native language is not English must provide official results of the Test of English as a Second Language (TOEFL).

Applicants holding an undergraduate or graduate degree from an academic institution within the United States or one of the following English-speaking countries are not required to take the TOEFL/IELTS examination:

Please note: Scores will only be considered official if sent directly to Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies from the testing agency.

3. Transcripts

Domestic applicants must have official transcripts from their college and other academic degree institution to Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Students currently residing outside of the United States or who have attended academic institutions outside of the United States in the past are required to have their transcripts evaluated for course equivalency by Josef Silny & Associates. After evaluation, you can send both the original and evaluated/translated copies to Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at electronically to ogps@med.miami.edu and mscti@miami.edu or by mail to:

Information for International Applicants:

Visa Information

Maintaining Student Visa Requirements

In addition to the above materials, international students must provide the following:

1. Financial Guarantee: An official bank* or government sponsorship letter (issued within six months of starting date at UM), addressed to the University of Miami, guaranteeing the availability of sufficient funds to cover tuition** and fees, books, room and board, medical insurance, and personal expenses is required.

*If the bank account belongs to a relative or other sponsor, a letter of sponsorship addressed to the University of Miami is also required and must contain the following information:

  • Amount of the financial support promised for the first year of enrollment
  • Date written
  • Name and address of the sponsor(s)
  • Relationship of the sponsor(s) to the student
  • Sponsor’s signature

**Please note that tuition varies depending on the number of credits required by the program. For specific amount, consult with your graduate department.

2. Copy of Passport: As soon as you submit your application you should email a copy of the biographical page of your passport to mscti@miami.edu. The biographical page displays your picture, name and date of birth.
